Visiting cellars in and around Dijon: where to start
A cellar visit is often the first instinct when arriving in Burgundy. But between touristy addresses and estates that only receive by appointment, it's not always easy to navigate. Here's what we've tested and what we genuinely recommend.
In Dijon itself: the good leads
Let's be honest: Dijon isn't a cellar town per se. The vineyards begin a little further south, from Marsannay. But the city has two trump cards for wine lovers.
Independent wine merchants in the centre: This is where the action is. Several passionate wine merchants offer expertly curated selections of Burgundy wines, with regular tastings. The Maison Millière or the wine shops around the Halles are good picks. The advantage: personalised advice, vintages you can't find everywhere, and a relaxed atmosphere.
The Cité de la Gastronomie et du Vin: A beautiful building with well-designed exhibitions on the history of gastronomy in Burgundy. But for wine tasting proper, it's not the first place we'd send you. It's more of a cultural venue. Worth a visit if you have a half-day and the subject interests you beyond the glass.
Estates to visit around Dijon
This is where things get serious. In 15 to 30 minutes by car from Dijon, you're in the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
Gevrey-Chambertin (15 min): Several estates open for visits, some very accessible. The village breathes wine. We recommend booking in advance via Winalist to secure a spot, especially in season.
Château du Clos de Vougeot (20 min): A stunning 12th-century château, seat of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. The visit is interesting for understanding the region's wine history. You won't necessarily taste on-site, but it's worth the detour.
Vosne-Romanée (20 min): The village of Romanée-Conti. The estate doesn't do visits, but walking through the vines and seeing the most expensive plots in the world is something. The atmosphere is almost mystical.
Patriarche in Beaune (40 min): If you head to Beaune, Patriarche offers 5 km of underground cellars with a tasting of 13 wines. It's a more 'mainstream' format, but the experience is impressive in its sheer scale.
Our tip: book your visits in advance
Many Burgundy estates only receive by appointment. We recommend using Winalist to book your visits — it's simple, you see availability and reviews, and it avoids disappointment on arrival.
And if you return from a visit wanting to keep tasting, the Jalunia connected cellar in our suites lets you discover local winemakers' wines in complete comfort.
