Burgundy vineyards in autumn — wine accommodation and wine tourism in Burgundy

Wine accommodation in Burgundy: fact vs fiction

Burgundy is the most prestigious wine region in the world. Naturally, accommodations riding the wine wave are multiplying. The problem: many settle for winemaker décor — a barrel in the entrance, cuvée names on the doors — without offering a real wine experience.

This guide is for those who want to live wine during their stay, not just sleep in a setting that vaguely hints at it.

The different types of wine accommodation in Burgundy

### Wine estates with B&B rooms

The most obvious option: sleeping at a winemaker's. In Burgundy, several estates offer B&B rooms, particularly on the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. The advantage is clear: you're in the heart of the vineyard, you can visit the plots and taste directly at the estate.

The downside: estates are often isolated, with no shops or restaurants nearby. If you want a stay that combines wine and city life, it can be frustrating. And accommodation quality varies enormously — some winemakers are excellent at viticulture but less invested in hospitality.

### 'Wine' hotels in Beaune

Beaune is the historic capital of Burgundy wines. You'll find high-end hotels that play on the wine theme: tasting cellars, estate partnerships, food-wine pairing menus. It's a comfortable, well-established option, but often expensive and rather predictable.

The trap: in Beaune, wine is so omnipresent that the experience can lack surprise. You're a tourist among wine tourists, on a well-trodden path.

### Independent wine cottages

Themed cottages exist all over Burgundy, from Chablis to Mâcon. Quality is very uneven. Some are genuine gems with a selection of local wines, personalised advice and an authentic setting. Others amount to a corkscrew on the table and a tourist brochure.

Our tip: always check whether the cottage offers wines for tasting or purchase on-site. It's the most reliable marker of a genuine wine accommodation.

### Urban wine accommodation — the Dijon case

Dijon is the main gateway to Burgundy's wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But for a long time, the city lacked genuine wine accommodation. That's exactly the gap Oenosuite fills.

Our wine suites in Dijon's city centre combine the best of both worlds: a complete wine immersion (Jalunia connected cellar, Armand Heitz wines, wine escape game, Vinésime cosmetics) and all the advantages of the city (restaurants, tram to the vineyards, nightlife).

How to choose your wine accommodation in Burgundy

Here are the questions to ask before booking:

1. Can I taste wine on-site? A wine accommodation without wine to taste is like a restaurant without a kitchen. At ours, the connected cellar is accessible 24/7.

2. Is there genuine wine curation? Anyone can buy bottles at the supermarket. A good wine accommodation works with identified estates and can tell you the story behind each cuvée.

3. Does the experience go beyond décor? Wine games, tasting workshops, partnerships with winemakers… That's what makes the difference between a 'wine' accommodation and a wine accommodation.

4. Is the location strategic? In Burgundy, distances between appellations are short, but logistics matter. Dijon is ideal for the Côte de Nuits (Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges), Beaune for the Côte de Beaune (Meursault, Pommard, Volnay).

Côte de Nuits or Côte de Beaune: where to base yourself?

Côte de Nuits (south of Dijon): the great Pinot Noirs. Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée… This is where the world's most legendary red wines are found. Staying in Dijon, you're 20 minutes by car from the first Grand Cru.

Côte de Beaune (around Beaune): the great Chardonnays and some beautiful reds. Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Corton… The atmosphere is more touristy, the infrastructure more developed.

Our take: if it's your first wine stay in Burgundy, Dijon offers the best compromise — easy access to both Côtes, urban life, and a booming gastronomic scene.

We designed Oenosuite as the wine accommodation Burgundy was missing: a place where wine isn't a marketing pretext but the heart of the experience. Every detail was crafted with Burgundian partners — from Armand Heitz wines to Bo & Co candles, VIE.GNE soaps and Vinésime cosmetics.

To explore the vineyards, we recommend Winalist for booking visits and tastings directly with regional winemakers.
