Buying Burgundy Wine Directly from Producers: A Complete Guide

Burgundy is one of the few wine regions in the world where an enthusiast can buy a great Pinot Noir or a Meursault Chardonnay directly from the person who made it. Between permanent markets, annual trade fairs and direct domaine sales, the region offers an exceptional network of short wine circuits that combine tasting, human connection and informed purchasing — often at prices lower than those found in specialist wine shops.

Three types of venues make this direct access possible: year-round permanent establishments, recurring annual events that dot the calendar from January to November, and the domaines themselves. Understanding these options is the first step towards building a cellar with confidence.

The Beaune Wine Market: open all year round

Located in the former Église des Cordeliers, a 13th-century church in the heart of Beaune, the Marché aux Vins is one of the rare places where you can taste and buy Burgundy's finest wines all year without an appointment. The address is 5, rue Nicolas Rolin, 21200 Beaune, open from 2 January to 31 December, 10am to 12pm and 2pm to 7pm.

Two guided tasting formats are available: the Discovery Tasting (5 wines, €25 with booking / €29 without) and the Prestige Tasting (7 wines, €49 with booking / €59 without). Wines span the major appellations of the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, including Premiers Crus and select Grands Crus depending on the current selection. All wines are available to purchase after the tasting.

The Salon des Vignerons de Nuits-Saint-Georges: 40 estates under one roof

Every March, producers from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Premeaux-Prissey open their doors to the general public at the town's covered market. The 17th edition, held on 7 and 8 March 2026, brought together around forty winemakers and merchants for two days of tasting with more than 200 wines on offer, at a single admission price of €12 including tasting glass.

The event runs alongside the Hospices de Nuits wine auction, making it one of the most complete rendezvous on the Côte de Nuits: visitors can meet winemakers, taste the latest vintages and follow the charity auction. Most participating estates accept direct orders on the day. Information on future editions is published on the Syndicat Viticole website.

La Saint-Vincent Tournante: Burgundy's great January wine festival

Founded in 1938, the Saint-Vincent Tournante is Burgundy's oldest wine festival, held every January in a different appellation. The 82nd edition took place on 24 and 25 January 2026 in the Maranges (Côte de Beaune), with up to 60,000 visitors and 15,000 bottles on sale directly from local producers. Beyond the traditional procession of Saint Vincent statues, patron saint of winemakers, the event is a unique opportunity to buy wines from the host appellation at attractive prices in a festive, authentic atmosphere. The next edition's location will be announced on bivb.com.

The Fête des Grands Vins de Bourgogne: 84 appellations in one place

Every November, the Palais des Congrès in Beaune hosts the Fête des Grands Vins de Bourgogne, the region's most comprehensive public wine event. The 153rd edition will take place on 13 and 14 November 2026: Friday from 2pm (morning reserved for trade professionals) and Saturday continuously from 9am to 7pm. Around 3,000 wine references from 84 Burgundy appellations — from Chablis to Beaujolais, including the Grands Crus of the Côte d'Or — are presented by estates, cooperative cellars and négociants.

Admission is paid and includes unlimited free tasting of all wines presented. Themed 15-minute tasting workshops (maximum 12 people) run on Saturday from 10:30am to 5:30pm. The prestigious Paulée dinner on Saturday evening, by reservation only, opens booking on 1 September each year. Ticketing is available at fetedesgrandsvins.fr.

Buying directly from a domaine: the underrated option

Beyond collective events, direct estate sales remain the most personal — and often most rewarding — channel for buying wine in Burgundy. Almost all independent winemakers welcome visitors, generally by appointment arranged by phone or email in advance. The BIVB (Burgundy Interprofessional Wine Bureau) maintains a full directory of producers with contact details and visiting conditions on vins-bourgogne.fr.

The advantage is twofold: you buy at the estate price, without any intermediary, and you build a direct relationship with the winemaker. Over time, this connection can give access to limited-release cuvées that never appear in retail. To find estates offering guided visits and tasting experiences, the Winalist platform — an Oenosuite partner — lists dozens of verified experiences across the Côte d'Or, bookable online.

Whether you are targeting the Salon des Vignerons in March or the Fête des Grands Vins in November, Oenosuite offers wine-tourism accommodation in central Dijon — just 20 minutes from the markets of Beaune and Nuits-Saint-Georges — making these wine events the heart of an unforgettable Burgundy stay.
