Wine Tasting in Burgundy Without Driving: Train, Driver, Bike

In France it is illegal to drive with 0.5 g/l of alcohol in the blood or more, and the limit drops to 0.2 g/l for novice drivers; the Dijon–Beaune train takes about twenty minutes and the Route des Grands Crus, around 60 km long, runs through 37 villages: all you need to taste Burgundy wines without driving and still reach the vineyards. A tasting of five or six wines is enough to raise the question of getting home, especially since few people spit every time. This guide compares four realistic ways to visit wineries without a car (train, tour with driver, bike, taxi) and gives order-of-magnitude costs.

The legal limit is 0.5 g/l of blood, or 0.25 mg per litre of exhaled air, and 0.2 g/l for a probationary licence. According to road-safety sources, an offence at 0.5 g/l brings a fixed fine of €135 and the loss of 6 of 12 points, with a possible suspension; from 0.8 g/l it becomes a criminal offence. The link between number of glasses and blood alcohol depends on weight, food and time: you cannot rely on how you feel. In a tasting room you can spit, but many visitors swallow the grands crus to appreciate the finish. The simplest solution is to decide your transport before booking the first visit, not after.

The train: the cheapest option for Beaune and Nuits

The TER connects Dijon to Beaune in 18 to 30 minutes depending on the train, with a dozen to fifteen daily departures according to timetable comparison sites; a ticket averages around €6 to €12. Always check times on the TER Bourgogne-Franche-Comté site, because service varies by day and the last evening return is the one to watch. Beaune is walkable: its town-centre estates and cellars, the Hospices and the ramparts are minutes from the station. Nuits-Saint-Georges is also served. The train does not, however, serve the small villages of the Côte (Gevrey, Chambolle, Meursault or Pommard), where you will need to combine another means of transport.

Tour or driver: the vineyards beyond the stations

To reach isolated estates, two formulas share the market. Small-group tours from Dijon or Beaune, often limited to eight guests, last about eight hours and, according to booking platforms, start from around €165 per person, lunch not included. Private tours with a driver-guide, often bookable for two people minimum, start at around €200 according to listings, but prices vary widely with length, vehicle and tastings included: always ask for a written quote. Another option is to book winery visits through Winalist and combine trains and taxis for the final stretch.

Cycling the Voie des Vignes: only if you stay sensible

The Voie des Vignes links Dijon, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Beaune and Santenay: about 25 km from Dijon to Nuits-Saint-Georges, 24 km on to Beaune and 23 km to Santenay. It takes two to three days at a relaxed pace, with electric-bike rental points along the route; see France Vélo Tourisme for the itinerary and rental companies. Note that alcohol laws also apply on a bike, and in the evening, after several cellars, the road is as dangerous as at the wheel. Cycling is ideal between tastings, less so for a big day of cellar visits.

For a short weekend, combine train and walking: arrive in Dijon on Friday evening, take the TER to Beaune on Saturday morning to visit town-centre cellars, return to Dijon in the early evening. For a group of four to eight, small-group tours or a private driver become competitive once the cost is shared. For active travellers, the Voie des Vignes over two days, with a night in Beaune or Dijon, offers slow immersion. In every case, plan your transport budget before arriving and do not leave the last train to chance.

A base in Dijon so you never take the wheel again

The key to a car-free weekend is to stay where the train arrives. Oenosuite, in central Dijon a short walk from the Palais des Ducs, provides that base: the Suite Charme & Vin (43 m², 2 to 4 guests, exposed stone, cement floor tiles, video projector) and the Loft d'Artiste (25 m², 2 guests, designed by Dijon architect Alexandrine Vaure, raw concrete, water-vapour fireplace, cocoon mezzanine). It is the only apartment in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté with the Vignobles & Découvertes label, a 3-star Meublé de Tourisme rated 4.94/5 across 100+ Airbnb reviews, with Guest Favourite status. The Route des Grands Crus is 20 minutes away, and the evening can carry on without getting back on the road.

Because tasting does not stop at the vineyard: the Jalunia connected cellar lets you taste Burgundy wines in tubes or bottles, self-service from the suite, and the tasting socks left in the apartment for your own blind tasting let you set up a tasting among friends with your own bottles. A miniature of Dijon crème de cassis is offered on arrival, and the wine escape game adds a playful evening. Booking direct on oenosuite.fr gets the best rate, with no platform commission (+33 7 50 96 09 18).

Giving a car-free stay: the Oenosuite gift card

Giving a wine lover a weekend often creates a date problem: you do not know when they are free, and you do not want to impose a drive. The Oenosuite gift card solves both: you choose the amount, they choose the dates. Amounts are 50, 75, 100, 150, 200 or 300 €, or any sum between €25 and €1,000, with an optional recipient name and personal message. It is valid for 12 months, works on any Oenosuite stay or experience and carries a 14-day right of withdrawal from the date of purchase.

Tasting in Burgundy without driving is not a sacrifice: it is what lets you really taste. Choose the train for Beaune, a driver for remote villages or a bike for slow travel, and keep a comfortable base in town. For a car-free stay in the heart of Dijon, discover Oenosuite at oenosuite.fr, or give the freedom to choose dates with the gift card.
